Sunrise, August 25

It was a steamy 72 degrees when I headed toward Split Rock Lighthouse for this sunrise.  There is a scenic overlook that looks over Lake Superior and at Split Rock Lighthouse, but there's not much else to see right there.  I hiked down the hill to join up with the Gitchi-Gami State Trail, which runs continuously from Gooseberry Falls to Beaver Bay.

 Morning light through the trees

A hazy Lake Superior

As the trail crossed this road, a deer was looking back at me

This part of the trail winds through Split Rock Lighthouse State Park.  I followed the path down to the shore of Lake Superior.

No matter where you go on the shores of Lake Superior, you're sure to find driftwood

Or trees that fall into the lake

The morning glow spreads

Even a thistle can be pretty to look at

As you can see, the sun rose behind these trees, so I only saw the clouds that reflected the sun's color

 Looking back at the lake

Subtle color change in the sky from one side to the other

Can you find the woodpecker?

Still following the trail back

One lone fishing boat

This big rock is on the hill leading up to the overlook parking

The morning glow surrounds the lighthouse
